What does a Consumer Unit Do?

A consumer unit consists of the main switch, residual current devices (known as RCD’s), and circuit breakers. The role of the consumer unit is to control the supply of electricity around the property. The RCDs are there to constantly monitor the electrical currents flowing around your home.

If any electricity flows through an unintended path, such as a person, the electricity is cut off within a fraction of a second reducing the risk and severity of any injury. Consumer units are much more convenient than the older style fuse boxes.

If a circuit has tripped there is no need to replace a fuse, you can reinstate the power with the flip of a switch. Consumer units are regulated to improve fire safety.

Reasons to upgrade your fuse box:

Safety – Modern consumer units have built-in safety features that are more advanced than the older ones. Your home and family will be more protected with a new unit.
